Dhwani Theory
☆ INTRODUCTION
Dhwani Theory is an important theory of Indian Poetics. The word “Dhwani” means “suggestion” or “indirect meaning.” According to this theory, a literary work can have a meaning that is not directly expressed in words. The reader understands this deeper meaning through suggestion.
The theory of Dhwani was mainly developed by Anandavardhana, a famous Indian poetician. He explained this theory in his important work Dhvanyaloka. According to him, the real beauty of poetry lies in the suggested meaning.
✧ SHABDA AND ARTHA
Dhvani is closely related to Shabda (word) and Artha (meaning). In the Raghuvansh, Kalidasa compares Shabda and Artha with Shiva and Parvati, showing their unity.
«वागर्थाविव सम्पृक्तौ वागर्थप्रतिपत्तये ।
जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वतीपरमेश्वरौ ॥»
Dhvani can also be understood through the idea of coding and decoding. Words act as the means through which meaning is communicated, while the reader decodes the deeper suggested meaning.
■ MEANING OF DHWANI
Dhwani means the meaning which is suggested beyond the direct meaning of words. Sometimes a poet does not say everything directly. Instead, the poet uses words in such a way that the reader understands an additional or deeper meaning.
For example, if a poet says, “The lamp is still burning in her room,” the direct meaning is simply that a lamp is burning. But depending on the situation, it may suggest that she is waiting for someone. This hidden suggestion is called Dhwani.
■ ANANDAVARDHANA AND DHVANI THEORY
Anandavardhana gave great importance to Dhwani in poetry. He believed that good poetry has three levels of meaning:
1. The direct meaning – what the words clearly say.
2. The implied meaning – what we understand from the situation.
3. The suggested meaning – the deeper feeling or idea that the poet wants the reader to experience.
According to Anandavardhana, the suggested meaning is often more important than the literal meaning because it gives depth and beauty to poetry.
■ TYPES OF DHWANI:
Dhwani is generally divided into three main types:
1. Vastu Dhwani
It suggests an idea, thought, or situation which is not directly stated.
2. Alankara Dhwani
It suggests a figure of speech or poetic beauty indirectly.
3. Rasa Dhwani
It suggests an emotion or Rasa. This is considered the most important type because it helps the reader experience the emotion of the poem.
■ IMPORTANT DHWANI THEORY :
Dhwani Theory is important because it explains why poetry can have meanings beyond the words written by the poet. It gives importance to the imagination and understanding of the reader.
A poem becomes beautiful not only because of its words but also because of the feelings and ideas suggested through those words. Dhwani helps us understand the hidden beauty and emotional depth of literature.
◇ CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, Dhwani Theory is one of the important ideas of Indian literary criticism. Anandavardhana explained that the real beauty of poetry often lies in its suggested meaning. The poet may say something simple, but the reader can understand a deeper idea or emotion from it. Therefore, Dhwani makes poetry more meaningful, beautiful and enjoyable.
